“Ulysses”: Studies of Novel as the Modern Interpretation of “Odyssey”

The article deals with the stylistic aspects of James Joyce’s novel “Ulysses” as a model of modernistic techniques. We compare Homer’s “Odyssey” with the novel “Ulysses”, detecting some common features and some discrepancies between them. For an overall approach to the phenomenon of Joyce’s style we review it in the context of the processes that were specific to its time, taking into account: (a) the history, (b) the relations with the classical literature, (c) the partnership with psychology, philosophy and some linguistics directions. We use S. Gilbert’s scheme for a complete vision upon J. Joyce’s work as well.

REZUMAT
În articol, supunem analizei caracteristicele stilistice ale limbajului lui James Joyce. Cercetarea trăsăturilor stilului lui Joyce se realizează pe baza romanului “Ulise”. Comparăm “Odiseea” lui Homer cu “Ulise”, identificând caracteristici comune şi particulare. Stilul lui Joyce este descris în contextul proceselor specifice timpului său, luând în considerare: (a) evenimentele istorice din acea perioadă, (b) relaţiile acestei lucrări cu literatura clasică, (c) aspectele psihologice şi filosofice ale cercetării și unele direcţii lingvistice. În prezentarea unei viziuni complete asupra lucrării lui J. Joyce, se aplică schema lui S. Gilbert.
