Abstract

This study examines the figure of the translator in the work of Jacques Poulin by highlighting its linguistic, cultural, and existential dimensions. Through novels such as Volkswagen Blues, The Old Chagrin, and Translation Is a Love Story, translation appears to go far beyond a simple act of transfer between French and English. It is configured as an in-between space in which the translator becomes a mediator of cultures, memories, and heterogeneous identities, notably Francophone, Anglophone, and Indigenous. This liminal position makes the translator a figure of hybridity, constantly moving between multiple affiliations without ever fully belonging to any of them. Furthermore, the analysis shows that this translational activity is shaped by fundamental tensions such as fidelity and betrayal, presence and erasure, desire and untranslatability. Silences and linguistic resistance reveal the irreducible limits of all communication, while translation becomes an experience marked by loss, mourning, and incompletion. Nevertheless, this vulnerability also grounds an ethics of listening and hospitality, making the translator a subject of desire and relationality. Thus, in Poulin’s work, translation emerges as a poetic and existential practice of in-betweenness, revealing the identity tensions of Quebec modernity and, more broadly, of any subject confronted with the plurality of languages and cultures.

REZUMAT

Acest studiu examinează figura traducătorului în opera lui Jacques Poulin, evidenţiind dimensiunile sale lingvistice, culturale şi existenţiale. Prin romane precum „Volkswagen Blues”, „The Old Chagrin” şi „Translation is a Love Story”, traducerea pare să depăşească cu mult un simplu act de transfer între limba franceză şi cea engleză. Ea este configurată ca un spaţiu intermediar în care traducătorul devine un mediator dintre culturi, memorii şi identităţi eterogene, în special francofone, anglofone şi indigene. Această poziţie liminală îl transformă pe traducător într-o figură hibridă, aflată într-o continuă mişcare între multiple apartenenţe, fără a aparţine vreuneia din ele în mod deplin. În plus, analiza arată că această activitate de traducere este structurată de tensiuni fundamentale precum cea dintre fidelitate şi trădare, prezenţă şi dispariţie, dorinţă şi intraductibilitate. Tăcerea şi rezistenţa glotică dezvăluie limitele ireductibile ale oricărei comunicări, în timp ce traducerea devine o experienţă marcată de pierdere, doliu şi incompletitudine. Cu toate acestea, respectiva vulnerabilitate fundamentează o etică a ascultării şi a ospitalităţii, făcând din traducător un subiect al dorinţei şi al relaţionalităţii. Astfel, în opera lui Poulin, traducerea apare ca o practică poetică şi existenţială a „intermediarităţii”, care dezvăluie tensiunile identitare ale modernităţii din Quebec şi, mai larg, ale oricărui subiect confruntat cu pluralitatea limbilor şi culturilor.
