Abstract

The following article presents the results of an inquiry into how the chatbot ChatGPT handles speech processed in digital format. Based on ChatGPT’s responses, it can be summarized that speech is treated as a human form of communication that can be analyzed using computational methods of an underlying architecture of transformer neural networks and distinct computational algorithms and models when prompted to perform a specific analytical task for spoken and written speech. In the case of an automated translation by ChatGPT we show how speech is processed. We argue that human speech-like text is generated by AI combining processes of machine learning, natural language processing, text representing speech as input, and the user’s prompt. In the discussion of the results we present a distinction between human speech and AI generated speech using the concept of fabrication for describing the generated content. In a model we illustrate the distinct areas of human speech and digital information.
