La réception de l’œuvre de Mme de Genlis en Russie

Abstract

The influence and popularity of literary personalities and their artistic work often spreads beyond the borders of their native country and the consciousness of their compatriots. The case of the French Countess Stéphanie Félicité de Genlis (1746-1830), tutor to the children of the Duke of Chartres, writer and author of her own pedagogical and moral system, is remarkable in this respect. Enjoying great popularity in France, her novels, short stories, plays and memoirs were soon appreciated in French-speaking Russia at the turn of the 17^th and 19^th centuries. Valuable translations of Madame de Genlis' writings have been offered to the Russian public by Nikolai Karamzin, Pyotr Chalikov, Anna Bounina, Ivan Zakharov, etc. Numerous references to her personality and to her various works can be found in the works of the greatest Russian writers, such as Pushkin, Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky, Gogol, etc. The perception of Madame de Genlis' work has evolved in parallel with the evolution of society, but the echo it had at a certain stage in the history of Russian literature is worth mentioning.

REZUMAT

Influența și popularitatea unor personalități literare, se înregistrează deseori dincolo de hotarele țării lor natale și ale conștiinței compatrioților lor. Cazul contesei franceze Stéphanie-Félicité de Genlis (1746-1830), preceptoarea copiilor Ducelui de Chartres, scriitoare și autoare a propriului sistem pedagogic și moral, este unul remarcabil în acest sens. Bucurându-se de o mare popularitate în Franța, romanele, nuvelele, piesele de teatru, dar și memoriile sale au fost apreciate în scurt timp și în Rusia francofilă a secolelor XVII-XIX. Traduceri valoroase ale scrierilor doamnei de Genlis au fost propuse publicului rus de Nikolai Karamzin, Piotr Cialikov, Anna Bunina, Ivan Zaharov ș.a. Numeroase referințe la personalitatea renumitei autoare și la diferite opere ale sale se pot întâlni în operele celor mai mari scriitori ruși, precum Pușkin, Tolstoi, Dostoievschi, Gogol ș.a. Odată cu evoluția societății a evoluat și percepția operei doamnei de Genlis, însă ecoul pe care l-a avut aceasta la o anumită etapă a istoriei literaturii ruse, merită menționat.
